Windows 10 asking for admin rights to run programs after lowering user access control

When the user access control is set to the lowest setting, such as during the installation of the Esprida LiveControl Agent, Windows 10 will sometimes request an account with admin access rights in order to open basic windows applications. Eg. Calculator.  Even when the current user account has admin access privlidges.

This is an error in Windows 10 that can be corrected with the following Registry entry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
“FilterAdministratorToken”=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\UIPI]
@=”0x00000001(1)”

Esprida LiveControl Agent and the User Account Control (UAC)

During the Esprida LiveControl Agent installation process on Windows 7.x system or higher, the Microsoft Windows User Account Control (UAC) settings are changed to “Never notify me when:”. This is done to allow the Esprida LiveControl Agent to be started in the background with administrative privileges without requiring the user to acknowledge any UAC pop-up messages.

If the UAC settings are elevated above “Never notify me when:” the user will encounter the following:

1. on computer startup, the following UAC prompt will be displayed:

Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?
Program name: EspridaAgent.exe
Publisher: Unknown
File origin: Harddrive on this computer

2. If the user selects ‘Yes’ the Esprida LiveControl Agent will start and function normally. If the user selects ‘No’ the Esprida LiveControl Agent will not start and the user will be presented with an error screen. If no action is taken, Windows will default the user response as ‘No’ after a period of time.

3. Every time the computer is restarted or the Esprida LiveControl Agent is restarted, the user will be presented with the same UAC prompt.

4. There is no difference in this functionality if the UAC settings are at (a) ‘Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop)’, (b) ‘Default – Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer’ or (c) ‘Always notify me when:’.

When I run Register.bat on Win 7 64bit, I get a java not recognized error.

When running register.bat on a Win 7 64 bit environment where java (32bit) has already been pre-installed, you may encounter the following error.

‘java’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Esprida\Esprida LiveControl Agent\bin>

To prevent this, register.bat must be run from the CMD (32bit) located in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder.

Does the Esprida LiveControl Agent work through a proxy?

Yes, the Esprida LiveControl Agent will work through a proxy.

Configuration of the proxy settings is done after the agent has been installed and before licensing of the agent is performed. To configure the agent, the user will need to gather:

  1. the IP of the proxy server
  2. the port being used for the proxy
  3. and whether the proxy requires authentication

If authentication is required the user will also need to obtain the username and password for authentication. Once the agent has been installed, the user will need to edit the config.properties file of the agent and enter the proxy information. After saving and closing the config.properties file, the user can license the agent and the device should appear on the Server.

Detailed instructions for editing the config.properties file can be found in the ‘Configuring Esprida Agent’ section of the  ESP-LC_UserGuide_AgentInstallGuide document which can be downloaded from the Resources page on the Esprida LiveControl Server.

How do I image a device with the Esprida LiveControl Agent installed?

When you’re going to deploy many identical devices, it is often practical to create an image of the device with the Agent already installed but not licensed. Before you create the image there are a few small steps to perform to prepare the Agent for imaging and ensure that your deployment process runs smoothly. These steps are necessary whether you’ve deactivated an agent that was previous licensed or if you installed a fresh copy of the Agent without going through the license process.

Steps for imaging a device
Make sure the Agent device has Ultra VNC™ Installed and properly configured.
If the device already has the Agent installed and licensed, continue with step 1. If theAgent is not already installed on the device, proceed to step 2.

1. Uninstall the current installation of the Esprida LiveControl Agent, by going to Start/Programs/Esprida/Uninstall Esprida LiveControl Agent.
Follow the Instructions in the Uninstall Wizard. Once the uninstall process is complete, restart the device.

2. Install a fresh Agent to the device by utilizing the Agent Installation.exe previously downloaded from the Esprida LiveControl Server.
Follow the Installation Wizard and choose the options corresponding to the previous installation you had on the device until the installation is complete.

3. When the Agent Installation Wizard is finished, the Agent License Tool will automatically start. Click the Cancel button, as the Agent will not be licensed at this time.

4. Now the running Esprida LiveControl Agent must be stopped on the device.
• If it is installed in a Windows XP environment, go to the Windows Services screen and stop the Catapult Start DMD service, as shown in the below example.

1

• If it is installed in a Windows 7 environment, open a command prompt and run the following command.
taskkill /F /T /IM EspridaAgent.exe
It will return saying two processes have been terminated, as shown in the below example.

Agent-IMG2

5. Go to the directory in which the Agent was installed, and navigate to the lib folder.
Example – C:\Program Files\Esprida\Esprida LiveControl Agent\lib
Delete the file: dmdUUID.txt
The device is now ready to have an image taken and the image applied to other devices.

Note: Once the image is installed on a new device, that device needs to be licensed as per the Esprida LiveControl Agent Install Guide.
